The Early Learning Corps program increases young children’s opportunity to learn key early literacy and numeracy skills. AmeriCorps members are matched with a PreK classroom and provide daily empirically-based support, boosting the success of children and the instructional capacity of teachers. Early Learning Corps currently places tutors in 8 states and Washington D.C. The success of the program is built on the collective value of three core features: Science Driven Intervention, Data-based Decision-making, and Training and Coaching.

Evidence-based Interventions

  • Aligned with recommendations from the National Early Literacy Panel and the Institute of Education Sciences
  • Literacy skills: Oral language, alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and comprehention
  • Math skills: Subitizing, object counting, number after knowledge, counting and mental comparisons

Data-driven Decisions

  • Screening data to guide student selection and support type
  • Progress monitoring data to evaluate student growth
  • Dosage data, including format and length of support

Expert Training and Coaching

  • Comprehensive and interactive online training on the program and science of early learning
  • Daily support from a coach at the school
  • Monthly support from a coach with expertise in the program
  • Ongoing fidelity checks

Highlights

Conducted by the Center for Benefit Cost Studies of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, this study concluded that the “Reading Corps program leverages a substantial amount of resources into Pre-K classrooms in a way that feasibly distributes costs.” The per student cost was compared to a $7,924 cost per student based on state expenditure in PreK programs.

Findings

Conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, this study found that despite natural disasters that reduced the number of instructional days by over 10%, students in Prek classrooms significantly outperformed students in highly similar comparison schools on measures of alphabetics and phonological awareness.
